Hostas are a common feature in many home gardens. You’ve probably also seen them in landscaping around town. So what makes these plants so popular? For one, they’re perennials. That means they’ll come back year after year. They also have foliage that is attractive and diverse. They come in different sizes and leaf patterns.
As a retail and wholesale nursery that grows many varieties of hosta plants for sale, we get lots of questions from home gardeners and landscapers about these plants. In particular, people want to know how to have the most success growing hostas in the Carolinas. Here are three helpful hints:
- Choose your locations carefully. In the summertime, the afternoon sun can be brutal. In order to thrive, hostas need sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Pick just the right spot to keep them happy and growing.
- Watch out for pests. Unlike many plants, insects aren’t a huge problem with hostas. Slugs are one of the most consistent culprits we’ve seen. However, deer and rabbits pose an even bigger threat. Create barriers or use repellents to keep them away.
- Water well. The more sun your plants receive, the more water they’ll need. About an inch per week is required if you don’t receive any rain. They’ll also need more water if lots of other plants, trees, or shrubs are nearby.
